Cape Cod to Cape Anne
A project by Robie J. Wood Architect

About the project
An efficient and economical solution to expanding a second floor was provided by utilizing the lesser known Cape Anne Style. Cape Anne's have gambrel style roofs which allow more living space than the traditional Cape Cod style's gable roof. Three ample bedrooms were created and a gracious bathroom.

Discuss your projectThe goal: more upstairs living space
The project expanded the second floor of a Cape Cod home. The design created three bedrooms and a bathroom, using a Cape Anne roof form to make more living space available.
The design response: a different roof form
The design used a gambrel roof rather than the traditional Cape Cod gable. In this project, the roof form was part of the solution to accommodating the upstairs rooms. It shows why an expansion needs more than a floor plan: the roof’s shape also determines the space available beneath it.
What this example can help you discuss
If your upstairs rooms feel limited, consider the relationship between the roof and the space you need. Bring your existing plans and goals to a feasibility discussion. Structure, stairs and the property’s development limits need their own assessment before a similar approach can be considered for another home.
