Your home, your priorities

Explore an upstairs expansion with a clear brief

If you are considering an addition in West Caldwell, start with the rooms and daily functions you need. A second-story expansion, a larger living area or a new suite can each affect the existing home in different ways.

Before you choose a direction

Bring your bedroom and bathroom goals along with any available drawings. Stair placement, structure and the relationship of the new work to the original roof should be explored before committing to a particular plan.

Cape Cod to Cape Anne — a project by Robie J. Wood Architect

Cape Cod to Cape Anne

An efficient and economical solution to expanding a second floor was provided by utilizing the lesser known Cape Anne Style. Cape Anne's have gambrel style roofs which allow more living space than the traditional Cape Cod style's gable roof. Three ample bedrooms were created and a gracious bathroom.

Plan around your property

A project starts with your goals and the information available about the building and site. Bring a survey, drawings and photographs if you have them, along with any known constraints or previous approvals.

Requirements depend on the property and proposed work. Municipal guidance helps identify what to check; the design and review process should be tailored to the specific project.

From conversation to a clear next step

Questions about your West Caldwell project

What makes a second-story study different from adding a room at the rear?

An upstairs addition involves questions about the structure below, stair access and roof form. Comparing these with a ground-floor option helps clarify the choices for the specific property.
